Sound familiar?

The conversation was good. Then life happened.

You meet someone who offers career advice and says they may know a person you should talk to. You leave grateful, then stare at a blank follow-up email. How do you explain what you need without asking them to find you a job? A specific request is easier to act on than a broad appeal for help.

What slips away with the follow-up

Vague outreach puts the work of interpreting your goals on the other person. Forgetting their advice or the resource you promised can make it harder to ask for another conversation. Your time and budget matter too, so a simple, repeatable habit is a good place to start.

Put it into practice

A better next step

  1. Ask for perspective on a clear question

Explain the role or field you are exploring and one thing you want to understand. Give the person room to say whether their experience is relevant.

  2. Make it easy to remember you

Share an appropriate portfolio or public work sample. Save the advice they offered and the next step you agreed, then act on it before asking for more.

  3. Request an introduction thoughtfully

Describe who would help and why. Let your contact ask permission, and keep them updated when a conversation happens without implying that they owe you a referral.

Where ConnectQR fits

Keep the context. Make the connection.

ConnectQR's Free plan can hold a small managed contact network and link resources; see pricing for current limits. Private notes and a clear next step are useful even if you never need Pro. Account-based warm introductions require consent from both people and do not imply a job recommendation.

A message you can adapt

Give them a reason to reply.

Your advice about showing a smaller, finished project helped. I have updated my portfolio with that in mind. If someone in product operations is open to a brief career conversation, I would appreciate an introduction, with their permission.

Illustrative wording. Replace it with the details and promises from your own conversation.
